Dear
Fellow Sports Fisherman,
Inshore
On the inshore scene, 2002 started off with a bang, Sea Bass, Blackfish
and Striped Bass fishing was outstanding. The Wrecks located 12
to 20 miles to the south of Manasquan produced many limited catches
of Sea Bass and Blackfish. Striped Bass fishing in Raritan Bay produced
exceptional catches using clams and bunker chunks. Bluefish also
started off very good but as the season progressed they became very
finicky, there were spells where you really had to work for them.
In November and December we trolled and jigged limits of Striped
Bass, but had to fight Mother Nature just to get out of the Inlet
at times.
Offshore
Highlighted by Yellowfin, Longfin, Bigeye, and Bluefin tuna, with
our largest Bluefin a brute over 300 lbs. and many in the 100 plus
lbs. range. We had a good early season troll bite for yellowfin
and Bigeyes all caught on natural bait such as ballyhoo. Later
in the season the offshore waters lacked the influence of
the Gulf Stream, which made fishing very inconsistent at times.
The chunking bite was on and off in 2002, instead of the normal
steady pick of fish through the night we encountered long intervals
of no hits and all of a sudden we be invaded with a mad dog bite,
which you've better been ready for. The Yellowfins were averaging
in the 50 to 70 lb. range with the occasional brute mixed in to
keep things lively. (Check out our photo section). The 2002
season was the best Blue Marlin fishing in our canyons ever. Swordfish
made a great comeback and many nights chunking resulting in Swords.
Unfortunately we had to cancel an unprecedented number of trips
due to Mother Nature, from mid September to late October, was the
worse weather I can remember. Multiple Tropical Storms and Depressions
and Nor'easter after Nor'easter hampered our normally most productive
months.
Other Trips
From the log book of the Fintastic, 2002 had a record number of
bachelor party trips. We also had the honor of participating in
the last wishes of several victims of the World Trade Center disaster
and many others who like the crew of the Fintastic, love the sea
and would desire to remain at sea forever.
2003
